What is Rosin?
Rosin is side by side with live resin in becoming a highly desirable CBD concentrate. Similar to live resin, rosin has become known for its fantastic flavor. Though, the true reason rosin is so popular with consumers is the fact that it is created without using any solvents. This provides users with a comfort most concentrates cannot, that the product is completely solvent-less and safe.
Rosin can be made using flower, kief, or hash, and the consistency can vary. Sometimes rosin will be very sappy and have a consistency like wax. In other cases, rosin will be very similar to shatter. Because rosin is created using zero solvents which can strip concentrates of their terpene and cannabinoid content, rosin usually has a very rich flavor with potent effects.
Full Spectrum or Broad Spectrum?
Rosin is usually a full spectrum concentrate. Because no solvents are used to create rosin, the concentrate that is extracted directly from the plant material contains the full cannabinoid profile of the starting material. In some cases where keif or hash is the starting material, the rosin produced might not be considered a ‘true’ full spectrum concentrate because it won’t contain the full cannabinoid profile present in the material used to create the keif or hash. Technically though, it will contain a full cannabinoid profile compared to broad spectrum concentrate products.
Why Has Rosin Become So Popular?
One word, solvent-less! The most popular attribute about rosin is the fact that it is completely solvent-less. That is, rosin is created using only heat and pressure. Not a single solvent is used to extract rosin from cannabis/hemp plant material. Rosin Presses equipped with high-capacity hydraulic pumps and heated metal plates are used to quite literally ‘squeeze’ the rosin from the plant material.
This means there is no butane, no propane, no hydrocarbons being used that need to be purged from the rosin. This process often strips other types of concentrates of their terpene and cannabinoid content and in some cases trace amounts of hydrocarbons may be left behind. This is why rosin is such a hit with concentrate consumers, it is the safest option on the market. Plus, it can taste just as good as the tastiest live resin!
How is Rosin Used?
Just like any of the other CBD concentrates, CBD rosin is most commonly dabbed. A dab rig is used with a torch or e-nail to vaporize the rosin, and this is one of the quickest ways to introduce cannabinoids into the blood stream. A dab tool is used to collect a small dab of CBD rosin and place it into the nail of the dab rig which is heated with a torch or e-nail coil. The vapor created is then filtered through water and inhaled.
Dab pens or portable vaporizer pens can also be used to consume rosin, and these are preferred for on the go use. Rosin can also be consumed by placing on top of a bowl/joint, and it can even be infused into drinks and food!
