What is CBD Live Resin?

CBD Live Resin is a type of hemp concentrate that has become extremely popular among users of cannabis and CBD concentrates. A unique extraction method sets this hemp extract apart from other cannabis products. This method preserves the fresh flavors, aromas, and the cannabinoid profile of the raw CBD flower.

This rich, aromatic CBD resin offers users a whole plant experience, meaning it smells and tastes like live CBD flower. Like most CBD products, CBD live resin typically contains 0.3% Delta 9 THC or less.

Read on to learn about how hemp processors make live resin, how it differs from other hemp concentrates, and more.

How is CBD Live Resin Made?

While most extraction methods start after drying and curing plant material, the process of creating live resin starts at harvest. Rather than drying and curing the hemp flower after harvest, processors subject it to flash freezing. This preserves terpenes and cannabinoids at their highest levels in the hemp plant.

Processors then take the plant material from the freezer and put it in a hydrocarbon extraction system.

These systems use solvents like CO2 and butane to separate the good stuff from the plant material. In the last stage of the extraction, processors purge the solvent from the extract.

The result of this unique process is a clean and pure hemp live resin extract.

What Does Live Resin Look Like?

Live resin dabs can take on several different forms.

The consistency can be saucy, waxy, crumbly, or just about any of the popular concentrate consistencies. As long as the flower the extract came from underwent the unique live resin extraction process, it is live resin.

Live resin is unique in that it can be many different types of extract. For example, if live resin has a waxy texture we can call it live resin wax, or live wax. Another popular extract is live rosin, which processors press from flower that goes through the flash freezing process.

Factors like the flower used, terpene & cannabinoid content, and extraction process can influence the color and consistency of extracts. Processors can also use special tools and techniques to further tweak the texture of extracts post extraction. Generally speaking, live resin tends to be saucy with a golden orange-yellow color.

What Does Live Resin Taste Like?

One of the standout features of live resin is its pronounced flavors and aromas. This is thanks to the flash freezing process that preserves the live CBD flower's terpene profile. CBD live resin offers more of a whole plant flavor compared to other extracts. Users can expect a burst of flavors, mirroring the freshness and complexity of the raw plant.

If live resin is like orange juice squeezed from the orange, other extracts are like orange juice made from concentrate. We all know which one tastes better!

How Much Does Live Resin Cost?

Prices for live resin can vary based on quality, extraction method, and THC and CBD content. For live resin containing primarily CBD, you can expect to pay about $40 per gram on average. There are many vendors selling fake CBD live resin online for much less, but beware. These products are simply isolate mixed with terpenes, they are not real!

THCa live resin usually has a higher price tag and can go for $60 or more per gram. THCa concentrate from hemp has skyrocketed in popularity. This is because the 2018 Farm Bill does not explicitly make THCa hemp products illegal. Online CBD vendors have taken this opportunity to market intoxicating products to individuals in states where cannabis is still illegal.

Live Resin vs Live Rosin

Side by side image comparison of live resin and live rosin.

In some ways live resin and live rosin are very similar, but, in other ways they are very different. The major similarity between the two is that both come from flower that undergoes flash freezing at harvest. This is what separates live rosin from regular rosin.

An additional similarity is price. While rosin can be pricier, these two extracts generally have a similar price. They will both usually cost more than other 'non-live' extracts. Of course, if either contains high amounts of THCa (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid), this will also effect price.

The primary difference between live resin and live rosin lies in how processors extract them. CBD live rosin is solventless which means processors do not use solvents when extracting it from hemp flower. Instead, processors take the hemp flower from cold storage and dry it, usually using a vacuum oven. Then, they press the dried flower between two heated plates forcing out the live rosin.

CBD live resin as we mentioned earlier is the result of a hydrocarbon extraction process. In this process, processors use hydrocarbon solvents to extract the resin from the hemp flower. While processors purge the solvent in the final stage of extraction, some users still feel uncomfortable using concentrates extracted with solvents.

It's because of this difference in extraction processes that CBD live rosin and CBD rosin concentrates can be more expensive. Consumers are often willing to pay more for the peace of mind knowing their rosin never touched a solvent. Luckily, vendors like Sauce Warehouse provide residual solvent test results for their CBD resin.

What Is Mixed Live Resin?

Mixed Live Resin is a term coined by Sauce Warehouse to describe low THC hemp live resin. This is a blend of real hemp live resin and cannabinoid isolates and/or distillates that generally has low THC content. This is a concentrate created with THC sensitive users in mind who crave a real live resin experience minus the THC.

How To Use Live Resin

The most common method of using CBD live resin is vaporizing using a vape pen or dab rig.

Vaping CBD is more effective than eating live resin gummies or using tinctures. This is because cannabinoids enter the bloodstream immediately and you feel the effects right away.

If you are shopping around for a live resin CBD cart, you might not find much. Thanks to the PACT ACT, it is illegal for businesses to ship any vape related products to consumers in the mail. Luckily, you can make your own CBD live resin cartridges for use with a standard 510 thread vape cart battery.

If you decide to make your own vape cart, a syringe or a dablicator can make the process easier.

These devices will allow you to fill vape cartridges with no mess and no clean up. Dablicators are best as they can measure and dispense the exact amount required to fill your cart.
