Regardless of whether you are an experienced dabber and concentrate connoisseur or brand new to the world of dabbing concentrates, a butane torch is an essential item to have on hand.

Butane torches create a flame that can reach temperatures of about 2,500 degrees Fahrenheit. This extremely high temperature flame extends up to 6 inches in length and traditionally this has made the butane torch a useful tool in several other applications such as melting and soldering metals like copper and silver. But, despite this awesome capability, the only thing we’re melting is cannabis and high CBD hemp extracts!

Despite the powerful flame which may be intimidating to some, these torches are relatively safe & easy to use. Handheld butane torches commonly weigh in at under 2 pounds and stand about 10 inches tall.

An easy and simple answer is to dab at the temperature that seems to work for you. Some prefer low temperature dabs and the ‘waste it to taste it’ mentality that chooses flavor over value of the concentrate. Others prefer hotter dabs that vaporize as much of the concentrate as possible regardless of flavor.

This is one of the most important aspects of dabbing concentrates. When temperatures are too high, terpenes are destroyed, and flavor is poor. When temperatures are too low, vapor isn’t produced, and concentrates are wasted.

The first thing to know is different types of nails require different heating times. Quartz nails and titanium nails are the two most common types of dab nails, and each retain heat differently. Titanium holds heat longer than quartz and because of this titanium nails can require a longer cool off time.

Higher temperature dabs produce a strong & immediate effect that takes just a few minutes to set in. Low temp dabs produce more gradual effects but provide much better flavor. If you're not sure which you prefer, give them both a try for yourself to see which you enjoy more. A good temperature range to start with is between 500-540°F. Some prefer to go even lower than 500°F. But this all begs the question, how do I know what temperature I am dabbing at in the first place!?

Infrared thermometers are available online that are made specifically for the purpose of reading the temperature of dab nails. These usually sit directly underneath your dab rigs nail and display the temperature throughout your dab session. Of course, not everyone is going to want to spend the extra cash to get one of these. E-nails are another option. These use an electronic controller box to keep an attached coil at a consistent temperature. The coil is placed around your nail and the controller box displays the current temperature which can be adjusted to your preference. But again, we know not everyone wants to pay for these types of devices!

There is much simpler solution that only requires the use of your torch and a timer. Simply heat your nail until it is red hot and wait around 50 seconds for it to cool off before taking your dab. This seems to be a universally agreed upon cooling time that allows you to get an effective amount of vapor without sacrificing flavor.

Yes. Unlike sparking up a joint or lighting a bowl, dabbing requires a much larger and a much stronger flame. This is because when dabbing, you are heating a quartz or titanium nail opposed to simply igniting dried cannabis. Heating dab nails requires a strong steady flame to ensure the nail is hot enough to vaporize your concentrates.

Butane torches create a strong flame that is perfect for heating your nail to a high enough temperature to be able to melt your concentrates. You want to evenly heat the nail and allow it to cool to avoid scorching your extracts.

Dab torches are refillable butane lighters, but not your average lighter. These lighters are extremely powerful and produce a much larger and stronger flame than your classic Bic lighter. • Small – Small torches are perfect for smaller dab rigs and nails, and they can even be used to heat larger nails if you don’t mind using a bit more of your butane and time to do so.
